If you're using Chrome on Ubuntu in a VMware Workstation VM it is likely, that it has been crashing after being in the background for a while. Sometimes it also kills the VM entirely.

For me the solution was to disable hardware accelartion completely - the performance isn't that bad after all.

Go to Chrome settings, then show advanced settings and disable hardware acceleration:
